2011 BEST PRACTICES AWARD PROGRAM HONORS NORTH DAKOTA STATE COLLEGE OF SCIENCE, UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN OSHKOSH, AND UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA-LINCOLN

(October 18, 2011) -- As part of its continuing effort to create better, more efficient, and customer-friendly business practices within its membership institutions, the Central Association of College and University Business Officers (CACUBO) created a Best Practices Award Program.

CACUBO presented its 2011 CACUBO Best Practices Award to David Lindberg, Human Services Director at the North Dakota State College of Science. NDSCS’s winning submission titled “Paperless Human Resources: a Best Practice Model” showcased the College’s transition from a paper-based human resource office at a state institution to a paperless one. Through its efforts, North Dakota State went “live” $31,000 under budget with to-date institutional savings of $14,000 in printing costs alone. North Dakota State received a $1,000 honorarium and Lindberg presented his winning proposal at CACUBO’s Annual Meeting in Omaha on October 18.

Second-place award and a $500 honorarium went to Deb Matulle and Lynn Kriha from the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh’s Division of Administrative Services. Their submission titled “Increased Delinquent Student Accounts Receivable Collected Faster” described UW-Oshkosh’s success to replace its long-standing paper billing process with an entirely electronic billing one. Instead of printing and mailing bills to students, email notifications are sent when students’ bills are ready to review online.

CACBUO awarded third place and $500 to Zainudeen Popoola, Ron Bailey and Larry Smidt, Custodial Services, University of Nebraska-Lincoln for their program titled “Custodial Training On-Line Experience.” This web-based training program focuses on improving the quality and uniformity of training new hires and existing custodial staff. Program submissions were reviewed by 40 program reviewers who judged the submissions based on the effectiveness of the best practice, its measurable benefits, its applicability to other higher education institutions, and future institutional benefits.

CACUBO wishes to thank each of the participants in its 2011 awards program. Details regarding the 2012 program will be forthcoming in December. Questions regarding CACUBO’s program may be directed to bestpractices@cacubo.org.
