Aaron Beam Jr., the former CFO of HealthSouth, represents both the Great American Success Story and the fall from Wall Street’s pinnacle to prison. His is the story of how something really great went horribly wrong and the price one man had to pay. He hopes that in sharing his perspective, as a key player in one of the biggest corporate frauds in recent history, he can help others avoid looking back on their actions and asking What was I thinking? Why didn’t I just do the right thing? He lectures today to business leaders and the leaders of tomorrow—how to avoid the pitfalls along the road to success by having the moral character to resist pressures to produce profitable earnings statements by any means necessary.
Aaron Beam will explain how he and Richard Scrushy founded HealthSouth and grew the company into a NYSE Fortune 500 Company. However, it all ended so badly when the fraud began in 1996 as he was pressured not to disappoint Wall Street’s earnings expectations. At first, only a relatively minor correction was needed, but subsequent quarters required ever-growing misstatements until he resigned a year later. A succession of four more CFOs all participated in the fraudulent overstatements before investigators uncovered the crime. This presentation will describe the corporate culture that allowed the fraud to continue for seven years. Aaron Beam will also discuss how you can spot the signs of ethical collapse in any company and the personal price he paid for his contribution to that culture at HealthSouth.
