President's Message

Dave Clark
CACUBO President

Dear Colleagues,

It's hard to believe that we have navigated another academic year and that we are busy preparing for another. I know for many of you this past year has not been an easy one. At least there are positive signs that an economic recovery has begun and things are looking better. That is not to suggest that all of the budget challenges and difficult decisions are behind us but to imply that better financial times are ahead. We know that there continues to be significant demand for higher education and that Midwestern values continue to emphasize postsecondary education as a primary factor to achieving personal and professional success. So while the economy has required many of the public to return to our institutions, as students, to learn new job skills and trades or to increase their education and knowledge to make themselves more employable there is no argument that higher education is pivotal to getting the Midwest and our country's economy back on track. What each of you do in support of this effort is to be commended and makes a big difference in the life of your students.

A major focus of this newsletter is on the upcoming CACUBO annual meeting in Indianapolis, Indiana on October 3-5, 2010. This premier professional development event has the programming theme of "shifting gears" to tag onto the Indy 500 racing and all of the change management taking place in Higher Education. Our host committee chair Jill Yates and program committee chair Henry DeVries have been busy planning for an outstanding meeting that will provide a great return on your investment of time and resources. The airfares to Indianapolis are very reasonable, we have a great hotel and location for drive-ins at the Indianapolis Marriott, and the programming and networking opportunities will be thought provoking and meaningful. In conjunction with the annual meeting planning your CACUBO Board is diligently working on a new leadership development program that will be unveiled at the annual meeting. We are currently on task for this new program delivery for sometime in 2011. I hope to see you all in Indianapolis!!!

Also in this issue of the newsletter you will read about two CACUBO workshops that were presented this past February in St. Louis. The pre-conference current issue one day workshop was presented, with 35 registrations, the day before the annual workshop and was a repeat of last year's entitled "Success for the Academic and Unit Business Officer". A big CACUBO Thank You goes out to Kathleen McNeely, Vice President of Finance, Indiana University and Greg Holliday, Director of Talent Management, University of Missouri System Human Resources for an excellent program and for volunteering their time and talent in support of CACUBO professional development. The 42nd annual St. Louis was also an outstanding program. There were 100 registrations which was an increase over last year. This year's theme was "Discover the Possibilities Beyond Today" and was supported by our generous business partner sponsors who continue to provide for CACUBO professional development during these difficult times. The CACUBO Board of Directors would like to acknowledge St. Louis chair Tom Corley and his committee for organizing and coordinating both events. While our attendee numbers continue to be below historical norms our registrations were up in 2010 and our goal to deliver relevant, high quality programming was met. Thank You Tom, committee, sponsors, speakers and attendees.

We also presented our Higher Education Accounting Workshop on May 17-18 at the Marriott Chicago O'Hare with a twist. The accounting workshops were delivered on the 17th and until noon on the 18th when participants had the opportunity to attend a half day session that focused on financial ratio analysis in the afternoon. The half day session was also offered on the morning of the 18th for those who didn't attend the Higher Education Accounting Workshop. We had 68 attendees for the accounting workshops and 36 attendees for the financial ratio analysis workshops. Many thanks go out to our Accounting Workshop chair Joanne Charles for her outstanding leadership and coordination of these events.

Finally, please consider volunteering in support of your association. It will surely be worth your time and effort and you'll make lots of new friends. If you are interested go to our website at http://www.cacubo.org and click on /About CACUBO/Volunteering/Become a Volunteer Form or e-mail Charlie Miller at chmiller@iupui.edu and tell him you would like to get involved.

Have a Great Summer

Dave
