The Higher Education Accounting Committee plans, supervises, and evaluates the annual workshop on higher education accounting standards and practices for public and independent (private) institutions. This workshop will give participants an overview of college and university accounting concepts, and the basic format used by public and private institutions on their financial statements. Although the emphasis will be on financial accounting, the material will be presented within the broad framework of generally accepted principles and practices of accounting and reporting for colleges and universities. The additional half-day session will provide hands-on experience in financial statement analysis.
INTENDED AUDIENCE: College and university accounting and financial administrators.
WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES: To provide an introduction to college and university accounting concepts and the basic format used by public and private institutions on their financial statements. The optional half-day session will provide "hands on" experience in financial statement analysis. Offering the traditional concentrated FASB and GASB sessions, along with an optional session on understanding and using the higher ed ratio tools.
Committee goals for 2012:
Serve a wide group of junior-level higher education professionals from a regional and national audience.
Present a premier professional development program.
Provide an excellent learning experience with outstanding instructors and quality instructional materials.
Provide a comfortable site, conducive to learning, at a modest price.
Enhance networking for attendees; provide opportunities for networking outside of class.
Publish a list of attendees.
Engage members and guide them to build on continually improving workshops in the future.
Net a modest surplus with a total segment enrollment around 100 students.
Continue to improve the tradition of handing over the workshop leadership.
Maintain the procedures checklist that was developed in 2010.
Explore changing the venue for 2013.
